Skin of My Teeth, but I Think I made it!!!!! Art Bead Scene Monthly Challenge

This photo:
Brown River by Wayne Thiebaud
was the painting selected for the
Art Bead Scene monthly challenge.

From the Art Bead Scene website:

About the Art
"River-delta views from the Sacramento area, cityscapes from San Francisco and beach scenes from Southern California, no matter the subject, these works uniformly attest to the artist’s ability to sensuously manipulate pigment and capture clear light and vibrant color. It is this technical virtuosity, along with the artist’s tongue-in-cheek humor and ability to capture the realities of our place in time, that have helped to make Thiebaud a uniquely American painter."

About the Artist
Wayne Thiebaud (born Mesa, Arizona, November 23, 1920) is an American painter whose most famous works are of cakes, pastries, boots, toilets, toys and lipsticks. His last name is pronounced "Tee-bo." He is associated with the Pop art movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture, however, his works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists. Thiebaud uses heavy pigment and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, and the well-defined shadows characteristic of advertisements are almost always included in his work.
His family moved to Long Beach, California when he was six months old. One summer during his high school years he apprenticed at the Walt Disney Studio. He earned a degree from Sacramento State College in 1941. From 1938 to 1949, he worked as a cartoonist and designer in California and New York and served as an artist in the United States Navy.

This month, I seem to be running behind.
Having this nasty cold did not help me.
Now, that my cold is fading, I decided, at the last minute,
to enter the ABS January Challenge.
I loved the colors,
so my entry is based on the colors in the palette.
Here's my entry.
It's simple,
but each bead is unique,
and I made each one.
I used a series of discs and donut shaped beads.
Each is a mini minimalist sculpture in itself.

At last,
ta-da!

I'm thinking, I'll keep it!

Look What You Can Do With Your Shorts and the one that brok my heart, The Tramp!

After cleaning up the mess on my torching table, I saw the pile of "shorts" had built up
AGAIN.
So, the game became,
use up the shorts.
The only "color" you can add is
Transparent Clear,
but it turns out, I had plenty of that, too.
This Rustic Heart
was made with a short rod of multi color and transparent clear.
I was amazed at how pretty it turned out.
Sometimes, these colors work for me, and, sometimes, they don't.
This time,
they did.

I made this heart and spacers with short rods, again.
Remember what I said about having enough clear?
I was amazed at what I found in the pile!

How about these fun, ruffled discs?
Two very short rods of two different colors went into making them.
The bead release even broke, but I was able to finish them.

Now, for the bead that broke my heart.

See that crack?
Dang it!
However, on the positive side, it's mine for however long it lasts.
I was going to call this set
THE TRAMP!
Hmmmmm! Will I be a tramp if I wear it?
Love it!

So, Besides Cucumbers, Do You Add Pickle To Your Glass?

Pickle is such an interesting concept when it comes to glass rods. When I used to think in a single dimension about glass, I used to think that a pickle is the result of what happens when you add vinegar and spices to a cleaned vegetable, usually a cucumber, allowed the mixture to process and ferment, then, after a time, a sealed jar was opened, and the result was a pickle.

Then I began to grow a bit. I learned that the term "Pickle" could also be applied to a mixture into which you placed your metal work to clean it. This pickle was always warm, and it took off fire scale.

Then, I began to grow again. I read a thread on Lampworketc in which the question was asked, "Has anyone tried pickling clear glass?" You can check that out here.
Pickle, I thought, hmmmmmm? I posed that same question to other people who melted glass.
Some people responded that they always cleaned their glass, but no one had tried to add pickle to their glass.

As it turned out, I received an order of glass that day. Before the glass went downstairs, it went into the dishwasher. Now, I haven't tried to pickle my glass yet, but I do clean it with a spray bottle of alcohol. I think I will, eventually, but I haven't done that yet. I will let you know what happens.

So, what do you do? Do you pickle? What are your results? Is it worth the effort or not? I'm interested in hearing.

Three Beautiful Things This Week

Three Beautiful Things This Week was inspired by a wonderful blog that Clare writes called Three Beautiful Things. Everyday, Clare writes about 3 Beautiful Things that happen each day in her life. It's a wonderful blog! I can only hope to imitate her in a very small way.

1) Glass, glass, beautiful glass! My glass arrived from Flame Kissed Glass in 2 days!!! Wow! That's all the way in California. I am impressed. Thanks, Irene!!!!

2) Even though I spent so much time in bed this week because of my cold, I took many long and luxurious naps that helped me to heal. I felt lousy, but the naps felt great!!!!

3) The winter thaw has arrived. Our temperatures are warming up this week. Today's high is predicted to be 32 degrees!!!! Yes, I can hardly wait to get outside now!!!!

Bead Table Wednesday on Thursday This week, Why?

Because I have a 'told. In case you are wondering, this bed, is my bead table unless I'm pounding on metal, then I add a small table to the side. (This has been a well kept secret for a long, long time.) This all works well and good for me. In the winter I'm warm. In the summer, I'm outside. When I make glass beads, I'm downstairs, but that's another story for another Bead Table Wednesday.

Heather Powers of Humble Beads started Bead Table Wednesday in her blog by showing us her beading table.
Now, I was tempted to show my lampwork beading area, but because of the mess, I didn't. Heather boldly stepped forward to show us her table. I wish my table looked so great. Now, at the moment this looks good, and the advantage of having a bead table on the bed is that you HAVE to clean it up whenever you use it. It's a necessity! However, when I am working overtime for a show or whatever, then it becomes more difficult to even want to clean up, but there is a need for a comfortable place to sleep at night. Even Pixie will move my things out of her way to sleep. Someday, I might find another place to bead. I do in the summer. It's wonderful to be outside! But with these short winter days, this is my bead table of choice, and I love it!

Now, where do you bead? Are you going to join us and show off your bead table next Wednesday? Come on, Show us your worktable!

UNCLE!!!! #$$@&^&**^$ Kumihimo

All right! I've said it: UNCLE!!!!! I GIVE UP!!!!!!!

If you are familiar with my blog and Deb Batten's blog, you will remember that Deb and I have decided to add a regular feature to our blogs in which we challenge each other to develop and nurture our creative souls. Each month, we choose a type of creative skill to enrich and nurture our creative souls. This month, it was: BEADED KUMIHIMO! All I can say is: $#$@^^%&&&***^%$#
As you can see from the photo, I was not very successful with this craft. Something got tangled, and the rest is history. I don't know what happened with Deb, but this is my fruitless effort. Deb, I hope you were more successful than I was. Next month, we'll be on to another craft. For now, this mess is going into my UFO box, most likely, FOREVER!!!!!! When it comes to nurturing our creative souls, I can only speak for me on this one. NOPE! I'm finished with beaded kumihimo.

The Charming Exchange on LE - charm prototypes

Deb Batten and I are hosting a charm exchange on Lampworketc.
You can take a peek at it here.
I still don't know what I'm going to make,
but I do have some prototype ideas.

This is what I call my Zen Charm.
The beads are smooth and can be touched to soothe stress.

I stamped this "charming" charm.
I'm still not sure.

This is my mantra for this year.
I'm still not sure.
Any other suggestions?
My guess is that I'll have so many prototypes that I'll have enough charms made for my 15.
I'm anxious to see what other people are making!

Wanna' See Some Pretty Beads and something sort of new?

I can truly say, I LOVE THESE BEADS!!!!!
I just listed them in my Etsy store.
They remind me of Red Velvet.
Check them out here.

I call these beads Gentle Whisps!
See the soft cane that I used on the sides of these beads.
These "spacers" are really good sized.
I think they'd have many good uses!

I think frit adds a lot of detail to beads.
I found this frit in a box that I had hidden on the floor.
I tried it, and I love it!
You can see more views of these beads here.
I think these beads would make a great bracelet.

These nuggets are rainbow colored.
They are beautiful, too.
This type of bead is one of my favorites to make.
They seem to glow from within.
Wouldn't these make great components in a necklace?
Hmmmmmmm. Now, my mind is going.
Life IS what happen s...
Honestly,
I did this on purpose.
Life is what happen s.
Nothing is perfect.
Life isn't perfect.
Take a peek!
This charm is sort of new.

Just because she doesn't have them yet.
I'm going to show you what I am sending her.

Six Word Story about Me

In
My
Happy
Place
Making
Beads!

(I think this is going to be longer than 6
words,
but I have to use a disclaimer.
No,
at the moment of this photo,
I was
not
making beads,
but,
I was in a bead store,
my other happy place to be.)

1) Things are heading back to normal again, whatever that is! Pixie and I are back home, and Jenny is resting so that she can return to work on Monday. The ordeal of the stem cell harvest is over, and now we can get on with our lives. Pixie is happy to be home. Jenny is happy to be home. I'm happy to be home, and life is returning to normal.

2) I "met" my Bead Soup partner this week, Cindy Dolezal. She's a ceramic bead artist and jewelry designer! Her beads are on the way to me, and I hope to get hers off to her in the coming week. This Bead Soup Party is going to be fun!

3) There wasn't much snow this week. I was glad about that. It's that time of the season when the brutal cold moves in and the snow continues to float down from the skies. It's the time of the year that I'm glad to stay home. The days are getting longer, though, and that's very good! I just wish they weren't so cold and white!

My Bead Soup Blog Partner - Cindy Dolezal

This gorgeous work of wearable art was made by my Bead Soup Blog Partner,
Cindy Dolezal.
Cindy is a ceramic bead maker and a jewelry designer.
Even though we are taking a tour of her Etsy store,
you can click here for her blog and here for the Etsy store if you want to rush ahead.
I wouldn't blame you if you did!
Here's the link to the orange disc.

(Click here for more information about the Bead Soup Party started by jewelry designer and lampwork bead maker, Lori Anderson, of Pretty Things!)

This pendant is called, "Kids under a tree Stick Figure Pendant."
You can find it by clicking here.
This rich, earthy pendant does remind me of the stick figures we have all drawn.
What a great way to remember our children or grandchildren on a daily basis.
You can truly wear these memories around your neck.

This is one of my favorite items in Cindy's store.
Leaf buttons!
Do you see what I mean?
Cindy has a great store!
Now, be sure you get over there before everything is sold out.
And stay tuned here.
Cindy and I will be trading beads very soon.
You'll hear more about everything then.

A Charming Adventure On Lampworketc

Deb Batten
and I have participated in many different exchanges on Lampworketc. As a matter of fact, that's how we "met" in Cyberspace. Since then, we have become good friends, and on some evenings, you will find us chatting away on Skype. You have to realize that Deb lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, and I live in Minnesota in the USA.

Through the years, our friendship has grown to the point, where one of us can start a sentence and the other one can finish it. Now, we do have a bit of confusions about this charm exchange. I said to Deb, "You had a great idea about this exchange." She said to me, "No, it was your idea." We aren't sure whose idea it was, but we both feel it was a good one. Our minds melded on this one.

Anyway, we, whoever "we" is, decided that a way to overcome the winter blahs here and the heat of the summer there, was to host a charm exchange on LE. The bracelet you see is mine, and it was from a previous exchange there. I don't remember who hosted this exchange, I just remember that it was fun. There was a lot of chatter in the thread, and I got to "know" a lot of people.

If you check here, you will learn more about our charm exchange. We are encouraging a lot of growth in a very supportive environment. Charms are not restricted to glass, and we encourage everyone to explore what they would like to do! Another great thing is that Deb just posted a fun Valentine related activity with prizes. You'll have to read the thread to find out what's going on because that's all I'm going to say.

So, hop on over to LE and check this out. I'm sorry, but our 50 openings are filled. Maybe there will be another one? We'll have to see what happens when our minds meld again.

My Drawing is for THE BIRDS! Week 2 of Drawing Lab with Jeannie

This week's assignment in the Drawing Lab was to draw birds.
I uploaded my photos.
I'm not sure this was what Jeannie was expecting, especially after seeing the wonderful birds that were already uploaded to the flickr group.
Now, don't get me wrong.
Jeannie gave wonderful instructions on how to draw birds,
everything from proportion to shading.
My birds were very much the cartoon.
However,
I was very happy with my last bird, which, I actually drew first.
Now, here's my study of birds.

So, these do resemble birds,
but they are the cartoon type of birds.
Now,
what do I need to make these better?
My work word for the year: DETAIL.
Sometimes, awareness is the name of the game.
Oh, and if you are wondering,
the bird in the upper right hand corner,
well, yes, it did do what you think it did.
The bird at the bottom has a broken wing.
The owl is confused as to who it is.
The penguin can't find his shoes.
Maybe there is more to the study than I thought?
My final, which was really my first bird.
Again,
this is a cartoon style of bird.
I don't like this bird as much as I like this one.

This bird is the backside of the bird 1.
You can't see it in the photos,
but the colors are softer and muted
which really makes it more sharp and attractive.
So, does any of this make sense?
I hope so.
It's late and I'm tired.
So,
good night.
I'm working toward improvement in my drawing.
This week,
the assignment was continuous line drawing.
Now, this should really be interesting.
Stay tuned!

Monday, January 17, 2011

Well, here's a plug for my Etsy Store. At last, there are some new items listed!

I pulled out my stamping tools again.
This is a new charm.
HOPE
my mantra for 2011.
Now, these are really fun!
I made some earrings from these bright buttons!
I used sterling for the wires.
How fun to wear as we get ready to bring on spring!
and you can find the earrings.

Know what kind of ring this is?
I call it a fidget ring.
When you get nervous,
you can turn the bead on the ring.
Everything is secure on the ring,
but the bead turns.
It helps take care of that nervous energy.
You can find it here.
Oh, but don't try to wear gloves with it.
They won't fit.
Now, when you look at these flower beads,
you have to know that spring isn't far away.
Aren't they pretty beads?
I love them.
You can find them here.

Well, thanks for looking.
Things are settling down now,
so I hope to be adding more to my store.
Remember,
We are headed towards spring!

This was SOOOOOOOOO Good, Now, here's the Recipe! Enjoy!

This was absolutely delicious!
Here's the recipe for this Breakfast Mash.

1 cup of whole oats (not the instant)
2 cups water
3/4 fresh blueberries
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1 cup leftover trail mix without the M & M's
(You can just eat those!)

Combine the whole oats and the water in a large glass microwave safe bowl.
Cook at 50% for 5 minutes.
Stir.
Add the rest of the ingredients.
Return to the microwave.
Cook at 50% for 5 more minutes.
Let sit for about 10 minutes, then enjoy!
I made mine the night before then warmed up the oat mix in the microwave the next morning.

Zentangles and Such

I'll grant,
Most of these need more work,
but,
I haven't been able to finish them,
YET!
Oh, and before I forget,
there is an exchange going on at
Lampworketc.
on Zentagles.
Click here to look at the exchange and possibly join us.
Oh,
and if you would like to zentangle, just remember,
if you can doodle,
You CAN Zentagle!
Now,
When I zentangle,
I like to use words in my work.
You'll see that when you see my doodles.
Do you see the word: WAIT?
I was waiting for Jenny at a Mayo Clinic appointment.
This really did make the time go faster.
I don't know if I'll finish this one or not,
but I was feeling a little bit impatient that day.
This was my cry for help in maintaining my emotions.
There are days, and there are days, and
some days are just like that.
This one,
I know I will finish, and, perhaps, frame and hang.
Now, I really like this one.
It's my name in Zentangle. I really like the way this one came out.
I might even frame this one.
I love to zentangle!

1) Duh!!!! Jenny produced enough stem cells for 4 transplants, if she needs them! It was a rough ride for her, but now that part of the journey is over!

2) We are home! I don't think anything more needs to be said about that.

3) Today will be my first day back on the torch. Now, I have to decide, what to make? what to make?

CATZ - Drawing Lab 2011 - First Assignment

In my life,
I have owned many cats.
I love cats!
My favorite cats were Pinkie and Sam.
They were both incredibly important in my life although they lived many years apart.
When I signed up for Jeanie's Drawing Lab 2011,
I didn't know what I was in for.
Now, that I do,
It's so much fun!
Each Sunday,
Jeanie sends us our weekly assignment.
I was amused to see the first one.
"Draw Cats," she said.
"Hmmmmmmmmmmmm," I said, "Cats?"
Okey dokey.
Little did I realize how challenging this would be.
I love cartooning, and it is a form of drawing,
so,
off I went to draw cats.
Well, here are my first cats.
They are more shape than shading.
I decided I wanted to have a little bit of fun with my "final" project, so
I was off to doodle and draw.
Art is clearly and expression of the mind and the creative side.
I'm not sure what this says about me,
but here it is:
CATZ!

All I can say it was fun!
Check out Jeanie's drawing lab!
The assignment for this week is
BIRDS!
What shall I do?
You'll see soon!

The Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester Minnesota

This is where Jenny and I have been staying.
The name is:
The Gift of Life Transplant House.
This unique house is located in Rochester, Minnesota, and it's only blocks away from the Mayo Clinic.
This home away from home is unique because it is designated a home for those undergoing transplants of some kind and their care givers.
I thought I'd give you a quick tour of the nooks and crannies I have explored since we've been here.
The Christmas decorations are still up,
so it's fun to see this house decorated as it is.
See what I mean?
There are trees everywhere!
This is am amazing fire place. It's so nice and cozy there!
Another tree in another room!

Trees in the hallway.
We found Nativity scenes on the tables.
Father Christmas visits a dining room.
Another beautiful tree! See the hand sanitizer? Bottles are all over the house!
Little elves cuddling!
The last of the trees, though, I know there are more!
It's a beautiful house.
